This essay argues that Machiavelli uses geographical analogies and hunting as a metaphor to show his readers that philosophical knowledge and skills are essential to princely education. This article thereby contributes to the debate regarding the use of geography and natural imagery in Machiavellian philosophy, demonstrates that Machiavelli inscribes himself in a tradition of thinkers using hunting as a metaphor for philosophical exercise, and offers a resolution to a debate reinvigorated by Catherine Zuckert (2017) and Alison McQueen (2016).
